Hunter PvP Tips: Hunter vs Shaman

As a Hunter fighting a Shaman in the PvP environment can be very tricky. While Shamans are one of the tougher classes to play well a well played Shaman can be downright deadly. It can be tough to determine just what spec a Shaman is until he's really into his damage cycle however there are a few handy tips that can be used by the Hunter when up against most any Shaman.

A good amount of the Shamans power comes from their totems. The nice thing for you is these totems typically have very few hit points and so are easily taken out. By setting you pet on them or using some sort of area of effect (AOE) shot you can typically get rid of them pretty fast.

Shammys will usually have a relatively small mana pool so you'd be wise to use this to your advantage. Be sure to keep a drain on him as much as possible. Between forcing him to recreate his totems and a steady mana drain you can quickly soak up a good portion of his mana. Once his pool is low or dry the melee ability of the Shaman, while not totally awful, is nothing to get too overly concerned about.

One Shaman spec that you should keep an eye out for is the Restoration build. The guys running around with this setup have a pretty impressive amount of passive health regeneration which frees them up a bit. These guys will do whatever they can to get up in your face and start chipping away at you while relying on Earth Shield and Natures Guardian.

The Elemental Shaman is going to be the build that is actually pretty dangerous. If they are built up right their Chain Lightning and Earth Shock can pack a massive punch. Keep your Silencing Shot handy and when you see a Shammy's hands start to glow and sparkle hit them with that shot. Anytime you can avoid catching a Chain Lighting Spell on the chin is a win.

So, in short: Keep them at a distance, silence them when they go to cast Chain Lightning, take out their totems as soon and often as possible, keep the drain on and just for fun get your pet chewing on them as well. Shamans tend to have an over exaggerated reputation in PvP mostly due to a few high profile guys out there that are simple masters at the class. In general, as a Hunter, killing Shamans should not be to much of an issue for you.
